Centralized AI inference requires users to still click through web pages, paste links, fill out search forms, and manually navigate menus. The intelligence exists to eliminate all of that friction, but it sits too far from the interaction. As long as inference runs in a central cloud, real-time, personalized, conversational experiences remain out of reach for the vast majority of everyday digital tasks.
In this interview on TFiR, Dr. Robert Blumofe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Akamai, walks through why moving AI inference to the edge will make the web page itself obsolete and what that shift means for every application developers build today.

Q: What new real-world applications become possible when AI inference moves to the edge?
Dr. Robert Blumofe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Akamai, argues that every type of digital interaction is a candidate for becoming agentic when inference runs at the edge. Tasks that currently require manual steps, such as copying a URL, opening a messaging app, and sending a link, can instead be handled by a single spoken or typed instruction. Proximity of inference to the user removes the latency and bandwidth constraints that make centralized architectures unsuitable for real-time, interactive AI experiences.
“I came across an interesting website and I wanted to send it to my wife and our youngest son. Why didn’t I just say, please send this link to my wife and youngest son? Done.”

Q: Is agentic AI capable of replacing web browsing as we know it today?
Blumofe contends that browsing through web pages and clicking on links is an artifact of the pre-inference web, not an inherent requirement. He uses automotive research as a concrete example: instead of clicking through a car manufacturer’s website, a user should be able to have a conversation with an AI that knows every configuration option, pricing detail, and user preference, and can surface personalized video and imagery on demand. The barrier is not capability but deployment architecture.
“Why am I still going through web pages and clicking on links? I think pretty much everything that we do on the web will turn into an agentic experience because it’s doable and it’s better.”

Q: How does the shift from web to agentic AI compare in scale to the shift from pre-web Internet to the web?
Blumofe draws a direct historical parallel: most people, especially younger users, have no concept of what the Internet looked like before the web. He predicts the same will be true of web pages within a generation. The transformation he describes is not incremental improvement of existing interfaces but a structural replacement of the web page as the primary unit of digital interaction.
“The web transformed the Internet and now we’ve got AI inference transforming the web. Most people have no idea what the Internet was before the web. I don’t think it’s that much longer before we’re explaining to young people what a web page was.”

Q: What is still blocking widespread agentic AI experiences from arriving?
Blumofe acknowledges that despite the technical capability existing today, the agentic experience has not yet fully arrived in everyday consumer and enterprise products. He does not attribute this to a fundamental technical barrier but implies the gap is one of deployment maturity and ecosystem readiness. His assessment is that the transition is close but not yet complete.
“I still to this day wonder why I don’t have more of that experience yet. I think it’s coming very quickly, but it’s clearly not yet arrived. I don’t think it’s that far.”

Swapnil Bhartiya: As inference moves to the edge. Can you talk about what are some kind of new real world applications that will become possible that cannot be done today because of this centralized architecture?
Dr. Robert Blumofe: Yeah, I mean, I actually think that every, every type of interaction that we do is a candidate for, for, for being agentic. Whether it’s, you know, the way you use your desktop, you know, a simple example. Just the other. I’ve told the story multiple times. Just the other day, you know, I came across an interesting website and I wanted to send to my wife and our youngest son. So I cut the, cut the link, opened up, the messaging, you know, typed in, you know, compose a new message, paste, send. Not that hardest thing in the world, but what’s going through the back of my mind is why did I have to do all that? Why didn’t I just say, hey, please send this link to my wife and youngest son? Done. Same thing as, anytime I’m doing anything on the web, I’m sort of in the back of my mind having the same, wondering the same thing. You know, the other day I’m sort of looking at a car website and I was browsing through, you know, different car, car makes for this, this car website. And I’m wondering, like, why am I not just having a conversation with, with, with an AI expert that knows everything about these cars, all their configuration options, all their pluses and minuses. Maybe if I’ve shopped there before, it knows about my preferences and why isn’t it, you know, able to show me, you know, what I’m interested in and we can have a conversation and it can show me the cars that I’m interested in, maybe with video, maybe customized for me and so on. Why am I still, you know, going through web pages and clicking on links? So I think pretty much everything that we do with our desktops, everything that we do on the web will turn into an agentic experience because it’s doable, it’s better. I still to this day wonder why I don’t have more of that experience yet. I think it’s coming very quickly, but it’s clearly not yet arrived. I don’t think it’s that far. I’ve often said that I think that the web has transformed the Internet and now we’ve got AI inference transforming the web. And I think the transformation, you know, inference transforming the web will be every bit as profound, if not more so, as the web transformed the Internet, you know, and most people, you know, certainly younger people, have no idea what the Internet was before the web. I don’t think it’s that much longer from now before we’re explaining to young people what a web page was and what it was to click on a link. There’s no reason for that anymore.
