Akamai Technologies has launched Firewall for AI, a new security solution aimed at protecting AI applications from unauthorized access, adversarial inputs, and large-scale data scraping. The product introduces multilayered protection for large language models (LLMs), agentic AI, and generative AI (GenAI) APIs, addressing emerging cyber threats that traditional web application firewalls (WAFs) are ill-equipped to handle.
As businesses accelerate AI adoption, vulnerabilities such as model extraction, API abuse, and prompt injection have become top concerns. Akamai’s Firewall for AI detects and blocks these threats in real time, ensuring the safe deployment of AI technologies. It features adaptive threat detection, proactive content filtering, and compliance safeguards to mitigate data leakage, toxic outputs, and regulatory violations.
“Traditional security solutions do not stop AI threats,” said Rupesh Chokshi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Application Security, Akamai. “As enterprises embrace the AI era to unlock new levels of productivity, AI security must be a key enabler. Firewall for AI is a game changer for any enterprise adopting AI. Securing AI applications isn’t just about blocking attacks, it’s about enabling innovation without compromising security or performance. With Firewall for AI, enterprise models, data, and intellectual property are protected from evolving threats.”
The solution supports flexible deployment via Akamai edge, REST API, or reverse proxy, offering seamless integration into enterprise environments. It also includes outbound filtering to prevent AI hallucinations and sensitive data exposure.
In addition, Akamai introduced API LLM Discovery, a new feature in its API Security platform that automatically detects and classifies GenAI and LLM endpoints. This enhancement helps enterprises update policies continuously to guard against unauthorized access and misuse of AI APIs.
With Firewall for AI and API LLM Discovery, Akamai aims to deliver a comprehensive defense strategy for enterprises entering the AI era.
