Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are all set to enlighten the future of game design and could be built into VR/AR headsets, according to Valve’s resident experimental psychologist Dr. Mike Ambinder.

Ambinder was speaking about the state of BCIs at the recently concluded GDC 2019 in San Francisco, Road to VR reported.

Interestingly, the long-term vision is trending towards neuronal implants, Ambinder added.

A good deal of the traditionally measurable ‘bio-feedback’ such as heart-rate, eye movement, facial expression, and muscle tension play a crucial role in understanding what’s happening to the player at any given moment, he explained. However, he went on to add that reaching into the core of the matter, the brain itself, is the frontier that holds the most promise for game developers.

“We can measure responses to in-game stimuli. And we’re not always getting [data] reliably, but we’re starting to figure out how. Think about what you’d want to know about your players. There’s a long list of things we can get right now with current technology, current generation analysis, and current generation experimentation,” he was quoted as saying.
