As solar energy gains traction among enterprise customers and homeowners, utility companies are looking at ways to access and analyze customer utility data to help accelerate the energy transition. UtilityAPI is a utility data access platform that can be used by solar companies, energy efficiency firms, virtual power plants, to request and download customer utility data. The platform operates a network of connectors across the United States and Canada, simplifying data access for innovative technologies to utilize customer data in their projects.

I sat down with Daniel Roesler, Founder and CTO of UtilityAPI and working group maintainer for LF Energy‘s Carbon Data Specification Consortium, to discuss the role of his company in providing a data access platform for solar and energy efficiency companies. Roesler emphasized the critical need of standardizing data access for clean energy technologies.

Utility data access platform for energy transition

  • UtilityAPI provides a utility data access platform for solar, energy efficiency, and virtual power plants.
  • Roesler notes that UtilityAPI is associated with LF Energy’s carbon data specification working group to standardize data access for decarbonization projects.
  • The consortium aims to standardize customer data access for energy efficiency and carbon reduction, engaging utilities, technology providers, and customers.

Data access and privacy for clean energy technologies

  • Data is crucial for scaling up clean energy technologies and grid flexibility.
  • Roesler explains how data sharing between parties is crucial for renewable energy transition.
  • Roesler also talks about addressing privacy concerns while streamlining the data transfer process.

Energy data access, privacy, and AI adoption

  • Roesler emphasizes the importance of realistic standards for energy transition, citing infrastructure challenges in Puerto Rico after a hurricane.
  • Roesler notes that industry and non-profit organizations must work together to address the existential problem of climate change, despite political decisions like the Paris Accord.
  • The political landscape of energy is fragmented, with power at various levels of government.
  • The working group is in its early phases, with a roadmap to be developed for involvement.
  • Roesler talks about seeking input from utilities, policy makers, and data consumers on customer energy data specifications.
  • Privacy around customer energy data is a growing concern, with a focus on ensuring standards are met while enabling AI technologies.
