Edge native is the future and Akamai has started building it with Gecko

As the cloud evolves and expands, so too do its use cases. What began as a way to leverage shared, centralized infrastructure to build and run applications that could scale up and down based on demand, is today shifting to a more distributed model that adds the ability to scale out, putting the cloud closer to the people and devices who need it.

In this episode, Shawn Michels, VP of Product Management at Akamai, joins me to dive deep into Akamai’s recently announced, bold Gecko initiative, which aims to embed generalized edge compute into Akamai’s existing edge network. “Gecko takes elements of traditional computing layers and makes them available on a global platform, allowing developers to reach users in 100+ locations and build new edge-native applications,” says Michels.

It’s a departure from the centralized model of cloud computing, building on the original cloud’s core compute fundamentals to usher in a potentially exciting new wave of innovation by extending the cloud further out to the edge and into places today’s cloud hasn’t reached.
