Hackers recently took over hundreds of Reddit communities to show messages in support of US President Trump’s reelection campaign.
The massive coordinated strike targeted a host of non-political groups, including r/weddingplanning, r/NFL, r/CFB, r/food, r/TwoSentenceHorror, r/space, r/CreepyPMs, and more, according to a support post on Reddit.
“A coordinated attack on reddit via compromised accounts changed numerous subreddits into pro-Trump propaganda this morning. Admins are on it, and subs are slowly being reverted to normal,” the post added.
For the uninitiated, the r/The_Donald subreddit was banned by Reddit in late June for repeatedly violating the site’s content policies. The community is said to have around 800,000 members.
“An investigation is underway related to a series of vandalized communities. It appears the source of the attacks were compromised moderator accounts. We are working to lock down those accounts and restore impacted communities,” The Verge quoted a Reddit spokesperson as saying.
The attack is reminiscent of the recent Bitcoin scam where high-profile Twitter accounts were compromised to tweet a bitcoin scam. The accounts of several major cryptocurrency players including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Kanye West, Bill Gates and Barack Obama were hacked to share an identical message about “giving back to the community”.
