As organizations double down on Kubernetes for building internal developer platforms, a persistent challenge has emerged: how to efficiently expose internally provided cloud services. Julian Fischer, CEO & Founder of anynines, believes Klutch —an open source project—could be the answer.
Fischer envisions Klutch as a pivotal enabler within Kubernetes environments, especially for teams building developer platforms. “Anybody who uses a lot of Kubernetes clusters will have the challenge on how to offer any cloud service to application developers,” he explained. “Why not use Klutch?”
The key value proposition is simplicity and integration. Fischer likens Klutch’s role to what AWS has accomplished in cloud service accessibility: once commonly used services are integrated into Klutch, teams can consume them within their Kubernetes clusters without context switching.
That experience elevates DevOps workflows significantly. “It brings the DevOps experience to the next level,” Fischer said, emphasizing that developers benefit from not having to leave the Kubernetes environment to access essential services.
Fischer also points out that Klutch can ease the operational load on teams. Writing custom integration frameworks for every internal service is not only time-consuming but complex. “If you’re a provider of cloud services, or you want to expose your own internally created services, you will benefit from having Klutch. Otherwise, you’ll go through the tedious process of building that integration framework yourself.”
Some may assume tools like Crossplane can fill the gap, but Fischer cautions that underestimating the integration complexity is a common mistake. “You’ll be running into underestimating that challenge, like we did in the beginning,” he admitted.
As Klutch eyes a potential entry into the CNCF sandbox, Fischer sees it as an opportunity to grow the contributor base. “Anybody who wants to cut that corner and get to the result much faster will be happy to contribute or be part of the Klutch ecosystem.”
With its developer-first design and CNCF compatibility, Klutch represents a natural evolution in Kubernetes-native development. It offers a practical path forward for teams facing cloud service exposure challenges in multi-cluster environments—and it could very well become a foundational piece of the Kubernetes developer experience.
