Linux Foundation Europe has officially launched the NeoNephos Foundation, a major new initiative focused on accelerating collaboration and innovation in open cloud infrastructure, digital sovereignty, and next-generation cloud-native technologies across Europe.
NeoNephos is one of the first concrete open source outcomes of the IPCEI-CIS EU investment, aiming to address increasing demand for secure, scalable, and transparent cloud solutions that align with Europe’s digital sovereignty goals. The foundation brings together a diverse coalition of technology companies, cloud providers, and academic institutions to promote interoperable, open source cloud-native technologies.
“Linux Foundation Europe is proud to support the launch of NeoNephos, which represents a significant step forward in supporting Europe’s cloud sovereignty goals through open source,” said Gabriele Columbro, General Manager of Linux Foundation Europe.
Columbro added, “By fostering an openly governed collaborative ecosystem, we can accelerate innovation by building and integrating with open source cloud native building blocks like Kubernetes, Sylva, and LF Networking projects. Together, we can leverage projects already hosted under the Linux Foundation global ecosystem, while ensuring alignment with regulatory and data protection requirements that are critical for European stakeholders.”
Initial founding members include Clyso GmbH, Cyberus Technology, Deutsche Telekom AG, SAP SE, TNO – ECOFED, STACKIT, and 23 Technologies GmbH, all committed to building a secure and transparent open cloud ecosystem in Europe.
The foundation will focus on three core areas:
- Cloud Infrastructure: Promoting open, interoperable cloud technologies tailored for European needs.
- Digital Sovereignty: Ensuring organizational control over data and infrastructure while adhering to European regulations.
- Collaboration & Innovation: Creating a vendor-neutral environment for building and scaling cloud-native solutions.
NeoNephos invites additional members, contributors, and collaborators to join its mission.
