The Linux Foundation was established in 2007, the same year Apple launched the first iPhone, following the merger of the Open Source Development Labs and the Free Standards Group. Both milestones have profoundly shaped the modern technological landscape we see today. When reflecting on how the Linux Foundation has evolved over the years alongside these changes, Hilary Carter, SVP of Research and Communications at the Linux Foundation, emphasized the importance of upholding open governance values and fostering communities that prioritize these values.

“We have always existed to sustain open-source communities in various ways—providing frameworks, legal structures, marketing support, collaborative programs, and, most importantly, governance models,” Carter explained. “There’s a key distinction between open-source projects governed openly and those governed singularly.”
