Matrix Reloaded: Firefox brings the web to VR

Here is a web browser that you can use entirely inside a VR headset. The first version of Mozilla’s Firefox Reality browser is now available for three virtual-reality headsets, the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Google Daydream. It features voice search powered by Google’s speech recognition technology.

With the availability of Firefox Reality 1.0, virtual reality (VR) goggle wearers can now browse the web without the need to use a virtual keyboard for typing any keyword, visiting URLs and search things on the web.

First teased in April this year, Firefox Reality is claimed to be the first cross-platform MR browser designed for virtual, augmented and mixed reality headsets, and that it is the only open source one to date.

“We had to rethink everything, including navigation, text-input, environments, search and more…The result is a browser that is built for the medium it serves,” said Andre Vrignaud, head of Mixed Reality Platform Strategy at Mozilla.

Features
• With Firefox Reality, you can choose to search using the microphone in your headset.
• Firefox Reality uses Mozilla’s new Quantum engine for mobile browsers. The result is said to be smooth and fast performance that is crucial for a VR browser.

Mozilla will soon be out with version 1.1 of Firefox Reality. In the coming months, the company plans to add support for bookmarks, 360 videos, accounts, and more.

The company is also working with creators around the world to bring VR-ready content like games, videos, environments, and experiences that can be accessed directly from the home screen.
