At KubeCon+CloudNativeCon in Salt Lake City, Utah, Shaun O’Meara, CTO at Mirantis, gave us a glimpse of the company’s increasing involvement in the open-source ecosystem. At the heart of their efforts is k0s, a standalone Kubernetes binary designed for diverse use cases, enabling high-quality Kubernetes deployments with minimal external dependencies. Another Mirantis’ open source project called k0smotron acts as a bootstrap provider for the Cluster API (CAPI) and offers a hosted control plane for Kubernetes management. In addition to these projects, Mirantis has also transitioned its secure registry solution to the open-source Harbor platform, actively contributing to the Harbor community.
The company is also working on Project 2A, an ambitious open-source initiative aimed at multi-cluster and hybrid cloud management. This project goes beyond traditional cluster management by addressing services, state, and observability layers, aiming to establish Kubernetes as a universal infrastructure abstraction layer.
