The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has announced the launch of an executive director search as Stefano Maffulli prepares to step down in October. Deborah Bryant, OSI Board Member Emeritus and former U.S. Policy Director, has been appointed interim executive director to oversee the transition.
Maffulli, who became OSI’s first executive director in 2021, led the organization through a period of growth and professionalization. During his tenure, OSI expanded its international partnerships, strengthened its policy and licensing influence, and took a leading role in the global conversation around artificial intelligence governance.
Key milestones under his leadership include the release of the Open Source AI Definition (OSAID) 1.0, the establishment of a full-time professional staff, and greater engagement in policy discussions on security, digital transparency and emerging technologies.
The OSI board emphasized that the leadership transition will not disrupt the organization’s current momentum or strategic direction.
“Stefano helped build a strong and resilient foundation for OSI during a time of extraordinary change in the tech world,” said Tracy Hinds, chair of the OSI board of directors. “We are grateful for his dedication to OSI’s mission and to the global open source community. The board is committed to maintaining our course and continuing the important work underway—especially around licensing, policy and the future of open source AI.”
“I knew that serving as the first OSI’s executive director would require strength to drive change and build a new organization from scratch,” said Maffulli. “Over the past four years, we’ve modernized the organization, grown its reach and reinforced its essential role in global tech policy. With strong programs and staff, OSI is well-positioned for the future. I look forward to supporting the team during this transition and cheering for their continued success.”
The executive director search will follow a comprehensive and inclusive process, aimed at securing leadership that will guide OSI into its next phase of growth and modernization.
