Open source project CAMARA addresses telco API interoperability challenges

0

Open source project, CAMARA, aims to define simplified, intent-based APIs to enable seamless integration between customers and telcos. In this video recorded at Open Source Summit in Bilbao, Markus Kümmerle, Program Manager, Magenta API Capabilities Exposure / CAMARA, Deutsche Telekom, talks about the project and the challenges it is working to solve. “We need a global availability of these APIs and that was the starting idea to reach out to the others to see if we can do a common alliance to work on these APIs.”

Open-sourcing APIs for telcos to integrate networks and provide seamless customer experience

  • Kümmerle talks about the telco trends that led to the creation of the CAMARA project and the initial aim of creating simple-to-use APIs that abstract the technical complexity away for developers.
  • CAMARA aims to provide a standardized interface between telcos and customers, enabling seamless integration and automation.
  • Kümmerle discusses why they decided to reach out to Linux Foundation and GMA and the benefits of this approach.
  • Kümmerle shares details about the community around the project, which now boasts over 750 people from 250 companies globally since launching as an open-source project.

Open-source project for telecom API development with potential for industry partnerships and product development

  • Kümmerle discusses the organizational structure of CAMARA project, where they initially decided to split work into different API families for efficiency while having a steering committee. However, he explains why they changed this structure to be a more reliable partner in the industry.
  • Kümmerle highlights the challenges of providing the best APIs for the telco industry, monetizing the APIs by working on exposure of the APIs, and creating real products for it.
  • Customers want seamless access to APIs across countries and Kümmerle explains that is the next big key focus for the project outside of commerce.
  • Kümmerle believes there could be as many as 20 or 22 implementations of CAMARA APIs in live networks around the world by this year’s Mobile Congress. He invites customers to join CAMARA to bring their ideas and help create the best APIs.
