The Kubernetes backup landscape just got a major upgrade. In this interview, Loft Labs CEO Lukas Gentele detailed how their latest vCluster snapshot feature is addressing one of the most persistent challenges in Kubernetes operations: efficient and reliable cluster backups.

The Traditional Backup Problem

Gentele highlighted the fundamental issues with existing Kubernetes backup solutions like Velero. “It takes very long because it has to iterate over all the resources, run a lot of kubectl requests to get all the data out of that Kubernetes cluster,” he explained. The restoration process compounds these problems with owner reference conflicts and ID mismatches that create operational headaches for DevOps teams.

A New Approach: OCI Artifact Snapshots

The vCluster snapshot solution takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of traditional backup methods, it creates OCI artifacts—essentially treating entire virtual clusters like container images. “It’s an image of an entire cluster, right? And you can take it in seconds,” Gentele noted.

This architecture enables seamless storage in OCI registries or S3 buckets and dramatically simplifies restoration processes. The entire solution is open source, making it accessible to organizations of all sizes.

Commercial Evolution and Enterprise Features

Looking ahead, Gentele outlined plans for automated backup capabilities as part of the vCluster platform. “Instead of running a CLI command to take an individual snapshot, you can actually tell the platform, hey, my entire fleet of virtual clusters back it up every night,” he shared.

The roadmap also includes enhanced monitoring and alerting capabilities, positioning vCluster as a comprehensive solution for day-two Kubernetes operations at enterprise scale.
