Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has expressed shock and anger after OpenAI launched in its new ChatGPT product an “eerily similar” voice to her own, The Guardian said in a report. The company had used the voice called “Sky” during its event last week, which “sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference,” Johansson said in a statement.
The actress was approached by OpenAI last September to voice its new chatbot but she declined the offer for “personal reasons”.
OpenAI said that it was taking down the voice, but insisted that it belonged to a different professional actress.
OpenAI said in a post on X Monday: “We’ve heard questions about how we chose the voices in ChatGPT, especially Sky. We are working to pause the use of Sky while we address them.”
The company has also published a blogpost about Sky’s creation, clarifying that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s voice: “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice. To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents.”
