Most open-source projects start as private ‘scratch your own itch’ whether it’s by an individual or at a company. However, as soon as a project is made public and starts attracting both users and contributors it hits the problem of scale. Scaling an open-source project is a bit different from scaling a product. The real scalability challenges an open-source project face doesn’t really come with the growing user-base, it comes with the growing contributor base.
