Mesosphere is the company that commercialized the open source cluster management project Apache Mesos, the same way way Red Hat commercialized Linux.
The company was co-founded by Ben Hindman, one of the co-creators of Mesos. The company predates Docker, the company that popularized containers, and has been evolving ever since then to keep up with changing times. Apache Mesos is being used by some of the biggest players in the market including Twitter and Apple’s Siri.
With the rise of cloud computing, the demand for Mesos and Mesosphere is growing. According to Mesosphere, the company has nearly tripled their revenue year-over-year.
In a blog post, Florian Leibert, CEO, Mesosphere said that DC/OS has become the premier platform to run the data-driven applications used by:
- 30% of the Fortune 50 companies
- 5 of the top 10 banks in North America
- 7 of the top 12 worldwide telecommunications companies
- 5 of the top 10 highest-valued startups
- 6 leading automotive technology companies
“The rapid pace of innovation has left many enterprise companies rushing to adopt containers and microservices but hitting a roadblock when it comes to incorporating data services,” said Rhett Dillingham, vice president and senior analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. “Mesosphere DC/OS eliminates that roadblock, allowing companies to automate Kubernetes operations alongside data pipelines made up of the most popular open-source tools. I’m thrilled to see Mesosphere extend its impact with this investment.”
Investors have great confidence in the company and the technology. Mesosphere has raised $125 million Series D funding co-led by funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. and Koch Disruptive Technologies (KDT) with participation from ZWC Ventures, Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and Disruptive Technology Advisers (DTA).
“This Series D funding represents how closely Mesosphere’s growth trajectory as a hybrid cloud platform has paralleled the growth of hybrid cloud adoption in the enterprise, and we’re just getting started. We’re poised to build on our success in automating operations to deliver the most popular digital transformation technologies like Kubernetes and Tensorflow so every business can increase productivity and unlock new revenue streams,” said Leibert.
More than 125 enterprise companies, including thirty percent of the Fortune 50, choose Mesosphere to automate hybrid cloud operations in production. Tommy Hilfiger revolutionized its wholesale operations by building digital showrooms on DC/OS. Royal Caribbean runs DC/OS in edge locations across its fleet of ships, creating game-changing digital customer experiences across the open seas. Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile, runs Apache Spark on DC/OS to optimize mobile connections based on machine learning models. NBCUniversal leverages DC/OS to reinvent traditional advertising to make it real-time with streaming and audience analytics.
