Akamai boosts its contribution to Open Source

0

Akamai had a massive presence at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe. When asked how Akamai sees itself in this ecosystem, Billy Thompson, Cloud Engineering Manager at Akamai, said, “If we look at cloud as an open source project, the role Akamai plays is to look at areas that need improvements, or new features. We make those improvements, add those features and push the code back upstream.” While more and more ‘traditional’ open source companies are changing licenses, deserting their open source communities, it’s refreshing to see a heavyweight like Akamai putting its weight in favor of open source. In this interview recorded at the event, we covered a wide range of topics including:

Cloud engineering, Kubernetes, and DevOps at KubeCon

  • Thompson discusses Akamai’s cloud services and announcements at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe.

Open source contributions and distributed cloud technology

  •  Akamai contributes $1M credits to open source projects, sustains them long-term.
  • Distributed cloud model improves application performance and security.

Easy distribution of applications and challenges at the edge

  • Ease of use is a key challenge in edge computing, with Kubernetes and Akamai making it easier despite tensions.

Edge computing and its potential impact on developers and workflows

  • We discussed the divide between cloud computing and edge computing, with edge computing being more resource-constrained and requiring awareness of limitations.
  • Pushing compute resources to the edge, including AI inferencing and workload orchestration, can make edge computing more fluid and centralized, while still being edge-aware.
  • Developers will have easier access to edge computing with new tools and architecture, enabling more use cases like gaming and data localization in underserved areas.

Edge computing, security, and data sovereignty

  • Edge computing can improve security and performance by processing data closer to the source, reducing latency and interception risks.
  • Thompson discusses Akamai’s edge computing strategy, highlighting the company’s focus on multi-cloud flexibility and workload orchestration.
