The advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked excitement around its potential to improve our quality of life. While many see generative AI (GenAI) as transformative, technologists remain cautious about the accompanying hype. They worry it could lead companies toward misguided investments and decisions. In this show, Dirk Hohndel, Head of Verizon’s Open Source Program Office (OSPO), shares this skepticism. Hohndel says that there is a ridiculous amount of hype in this space, adding that GenAI isn’t true intelligence but more akin to ‘autocorrect on steroids’.
However, Hohndel acknowledges the significant real-world potential of AI when applied appropriately. He sees it as a powerful tool to simplify tasks and assist experts—rather than replace them.
