In a rapidly evolving Observability landscape, most solutions still struggle with scale, cost, and governance—until now. In a recent TFiR interview, Swapnil Bhartiya sat down with Bob Quillin, Founder and CEO of ControlTheory, to understand how his company is building a smarter and more cost-effective Observability layer using OpenTelemetry.
Fresh off its official launch and a $5 million seed round, ControlTheory is tackling an urgent pain point: the explosion of data from metrics, logs, and especially traces. As Quillin notes, “When you start turning traces on, the volume of information can spike your cost significantly.” The traditional solution—random or exhaustive sampling—either risks missing critical signals or breaks the budget.
ControlTheory’s answer? Tail sampling: a smarter, context-aware approach that only sends the most meaningful traces to your Observability platforms. This not only boosts root cause analysis but also drives down operational costs. According to Quillin, “We help teams send only the most important traces, enabling better cost control and better performance insights.”
The startup’s value becomes even more evident in industries with high data sensitivity. From e-commerce to healthcare, the need to redact, mask, and filter sensitive telemetry—while staying compliant with regulations like HIPAA—is paramount. “People want to have their logs and metrics filtered out or masked before sending them to an Observability solution,” Quillin said.
ControlTheory integrates with widely used platforms like Prometheus, Grafana, Chronosphere, Datadog, Dynatrace, and others. This ecosystem-wide approach underscores its mission: don’t replace, enhance.
The company is also heavily involved in the OpenTelemetry community, reinforcing the idea that open standards are the backbone of scalable Observability. As more organizations look to embrace AIOps, having an open control plane layered on top of existing telemetry pipelines could become the norm rather than the exception.
Looking ahead, ControlTheory is focused on expanding its partnerships and onboarding early customers. With a free trial already live and a plug-and-play model, the team is inviting DevOps professionals, platform engineers, and SREs to explore a more intelligent way to manage Observability.
For those looking to solve today’s telemetry chaos while preparing for tomorrow’s data explosion, ControlTheory offers a compelling path forward.
