Loft Labs is one of the rising stars in the cloud-native and Kubernetes ecosystem focusing on open source and addressing developers’ challenges. One of the company’s flagship projects and products is vCluster which has seen significant traction recently.

With growing demand for vCluster, Loft is working on meeting where its customers are. Following the launch of vCluster Pro as a commercial offering, the company recently introduced vCluster Cloud at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon in Salt Lake City, Utah. [Be sure to check out our in-depth interview with Lukas Gentele, where we discuss the exciting developments around vCluster Cloud.]

In this interview, Saiyam Pathak, Principal Developer Advocate at Loft Labs, joined me to delve into the open-source and community aspects of Loft’s work. We talked about what’s driving the increased interest in ‘platform engineering’ recently.

Pathak sees platform engineering as a potential solution to Kubernetes’ multi-tenancy challenges. While he acknowledges concerns that the term might be overused in marketing, he highlights its role in addressing pressing day-two challenges in Kubernetes, such as resource inefficiency and escalating costs in multi-cluster management. That’s precisely where vCluster shines.

Pathak is also focussing on accelerated community growth and education efforts around Loft’s open-source initiatives. He also aims to understand and address challenges for community adoption of vCluster.

Questions discussed:

  • Why is there suddenly a lot of discussion about platform engineering?
  • How is the community growing around Loft’s open-source projects?
  • How does Pathak envision the community growing further?
  • How does the open-source aspect of vCluster relate to its commercial offerings?
