The Linux Foundation Research has released a new report titled “Open Source and Energy Interoperability: Opportunities for Energy Stakeholders in Canada.” Sponsored by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and with significant contributions from LF Energy, the report explores how open-source software (OSS) can address interoperability challenges in managing distributed energy resources.

Based on interviews with 17 experts in energy grid modernization, the report identifies key reasons for harmonizing the grid and highlights major interoperability challenges, including communication, data sharing, privacy, and security. It also discusses strategies to enhance the adoption of standards to overcome these challenges.

The report features case studies demonstrating how open-source solutions have improved the sustainability, efficiency, and interoperability of energy utility projects. While the report primarily focuses on Canada, its findings have broad relevance for other countries.
