When Frank Karlitschek launched Nextcloud in 2016, it was a secure, open source alternative to Dropbox. Today, it’s evolved into something much bigger: a fully integrated, private, and sustainable collaboration suite that can go toe-to-toe with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and Zoom—all without the data tradeoffs.
“We offer file sync, chat, video conferencing, calendars, contacts, and an office suite,” said Karlitschek in a recent interview with TFiR. “But what makes Nextcloud unique is that it’s fully open source, and you can run it wherever you want.”

A Surge in Demand—Driven by Data Control
Nextcloud’s appeal isn’t just technical—it’s political. According to Karlitschek, demand has tripled in 2024 as governments and enterprises around the world seek digital sovereignty and data privacy amid rising geopolitical tensions.
“It’s no longer just developers who care about open source,” Karlitschek said. “Everyone wants to know where their data lives—and who controls it.”
This isn’t limited to Europe, where Nextcloud is already well established. Organizations globally—from universities to national governments—are adopting the platform for its self-hosting capabilities and security posture.
Talk Munich: Everything, Integrated
The latest release, Talk “Munich”, is a leap forward in integrated collaboration. Like Microsoft Teams, it brings together messaging, video calls, calendars, and file sharing—but in a self-hosted, open source environment.
“We’re focused on tight integration,” said Karlitschek. “These tools aren’t bolted on—they’re deeply connected, making the platform easier to use and more powerful.”
Cloud Freedom with Real Partners
Despite its self-hosted roots, Nextcloud is now widely available through major cloud providers. Partners in Europe like IONOS and OVHcloud offer turnkey deployments, while U.S.-based users can deploy via AWS or Google Cloud marketplaces.
Still, Karlitschek emphasized that Nextcloud itself doesn’t host any user data. That’s by design.
“We don’t want your usernames, passwords, or metadata,” he said. “We enable a decentralized ecosystem—not a central instance.”
AI, But On Your Terms
Nextcloud has also entered the AI era—on its own terms. The company’s new local AI assistant integrates with open models like Falcon, Mistral, and Llama to deliver privacy-respecting features such as transcription, summarization, and intelligent replies.
“We didn’t want to just integrate ChatGPT,” Karlitschek said. “Our models run locally. You get Copilot-like features, but your data never leaves your server.”
Looking ahead, the AI assistant is evolving into a full “agentic AI” feature—capable of taking actions like scheduling meetings, sending emails, or summarizing documents—all within your own infrastructure.
Recognized for Sustainability
Nextcloud is also the first software platform to receive Germany’s Blauer Engel (Blue Angel) ecolabel, typically awarded to energy-efficient hardware. Karlitschek worked with regulators to help define sustainability metrics for cloud software—raising the bar for the entire industry.
“AI and cloud software are the real drivers of energy use today,” he said. “We need standards—and incentives—for more efficient solutions.”
