Tesla’s new Austin-area Gigafactory is officially being opened today on Harold Green Road, most likely by the company’s CEO Elon Musk, at the event dubbed the Cyber Rodeo. As reported by Electrek, the grand opening of the company’s fifth Giga plant will include the official launch of Model Y production at the plant.
Doors open to the invite-only party at the 8-million-square-foot facility at 4 PM. Also, Musk is likely to take the stage around 9 PM and share details on upcoming products.
Interestingly, Tesla is producing a new version of the Model Y at Giga Texas with its new 4680 battery cell and structural battery pack design. According to the Electrek report, two Cybertruck prototypes along with some unidentified vehicles were spotted at the new Gigafactory in Austin.
The factory will help boost Tesla’s production capacity as well as provide jobs in the area.
The company broke ground on the Gigafactory in June 2014 outside Sparks, Nevada.
