If you recall a report by TechCrunch from November of last year, there was a mention of the Rift S – the next-gen headset by Oculus. It also said that the S will have inside-out tracking. Now Upload VR has confirmed the report, saying it found new filenames in Oculus’ PC application.

The report further adds that the device will have in-built cameras and sensors, doing away with the need to use external accessories for tracking.

“The setting referencing cameras is in a section for the Rift headset. The Oculus PC app typically recognizes USB-powered sensors as separate devices, so the inclusion of cameras in this section suggests they are on-board the headset itself,” explains the report. So the plus point is your VR becomes more portable.

Let’s not confuse it with the Rift S going wireless. For instance, HTC’s upcoming headset will also feature inside-out tracking. For external processing though, you would need to tether the device to a PC.

But yes, you can expect the Rift S to be less cumbersome for sure. There’s no word on its release date yet.
